Explanation of Tier 3

Tier III: Our textbook defines the third Tier of the RtI model as representing "individualized programming for children with special needs and even a totally different school environment" (pg. 8).

The third Tier of the RtI model allows for students to get the one-on-one help they need. Sometimes larger groups, (such as: full-sized classrooms and small groups), don't work for everyone. Whether it be because of their mental capacity, or some other reason, some students cannot handle general education classrooms - and that's more than okay. Tier III is the most intensive interventions, which allows for students who need more of a push than other students, to really receive the support they need in their education. The last and final tier allows for students to receive the help they need in the specific skills that they struggle in.

If a student is struggling with Tier's I and II, they may be referred to Tier III. With Tier III being more intensive - as it is known to have the most intensive interventions - it really allows for your child to have the support he/she may need while navigating through their educational life. In this third tier, there will be more intensive instruction provided for specific skills that the student struggles in; parents will receive updates as progress will be monitored. The student will spend a good part of his/her day in the general education classroom before breaking off into small groups in order to receive lessons that target a specific area the student may need to work on. While the student is receiving this lesson, the rest of the classroom may be partaking in some sort of other lesson or activity; whether it be elective or educational. If a student is having difficulty with Tier III of the RtI model, he/she may referred for an evaluation with Special Education Services.
